Under the shadow of the global pandemic and climate crisis, tourism is facing unprecedented uncertainty. GOOD Awaits says that returning to business as usual is not an option.

GOOD Awaits in Studio

Debbie Clarke and Josie Major

Co-hosts Debbie Clarke, Founder of New Zealand Awaits, and Josie Major, New Zealand Programme Manager for GOOD Travel, are setting out on a journey to discover what “reimagining” tourism looks like through conversations with pioneers and practitioners of regenerative tourism in New Zealand.

With increasing conversations around sustainable tourism in the industry, the GOOD Awaits podcast will explore how regenerative tourism takes these intentions to another level, to a new way of thinking.

What is Regenerative Tourism?

Regenerative tourism is a mindset shift, a new paradigm and way of viewing the world. It is about looking at our communities as living systems, of which tourism businesses are a part, and asking how tourism can contribute to thriving communities. Regenerative tourism is grounded in the long-held wisdom of indigenous peoples, and in Aotearoa New Zealand this includes actively re-embedding Māori values and traditions into tourism, including concepts such as manaakitanga (hospitality) and kaitiakitanga (guardianship or stewardship).

Shifts in Thinking about Tourism

The podcast is in part inspired by the online Regenerative Tourism course led by international regenerative tourism thought leaders, Anna Pollock and Michelle Holliday, and on offer to Regional Tourism Organisations (RTOs) in New Zealand.

The course has inspired significant shifts in thinking for the individuals and RTOs who participated. It offered an amazing framework for this new paradigm and, even more importantly, it gave participants the space, time, and language to have conversations, ask questions, and then harvest these ideas for change.

Platform of Collective Discovery

The GOOD Awaits Podcast seeks to continue these conversations, serving as a “platform of collective discovery”. Anna Pollock and Michelle Holliday, along with trailblazing tourism operators in New Zealand, such as Trent Yeo (ZipTrek Eco Tours) and Nadine ToeToe (Kohutapu Lodge and Tribal Tours), will share their insights and experiences as guests on the podcast.

The hope is for this podcast to be a collaborative process. A truly regenerative industry needs participation from everyone, in and out of tourism. The hope is for listeners to actively engage with GOOD Awaits and so help maintain the momentum on this collective journey to a better future for all of us.

Podcast Launch Date

The first episode of the GOOD Awaits Podcast in conversation with Anna Pollock is available on 26th May 2021 on all major streaming platforms, and on goodawaits.podbean.com
